Violent Attacks Against LGBT in Georgia

We, four delegates from the European Forum of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Christian Groups at the 1st International IDAHO Conference in The Hague, Netherlands, were shocked to hear of the violence in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Friday. LGBT activists gathered to mark the day, and 21 attendees were caught up in the violence and injured. Orthodox priests were directly inciting stone throwing as clearly seen on media film footage.

As LGBT Christians, we strongly condemn the use of religion as an instrument of hatred and incitement of this horrific acts of aggression. The use of the God of love for attacking LGBT people and their allies is morally wrong and spiritually unacceptable.

“We call on the Georgian authorities to seriously investigate these hate crimes committed on the streets of Tbilisi, including those who incited to this violence. Georgia should demonstrate that discrimination and violence are not tolerated and are not practiced as ‘traditional values’,” declared Michael Brinkschröder, Co-President of the European Forum of LGBT Christian Groups.

Christian communities in 44 cities from ten countries in Europe have organised prayer events and vigils around the IDAHO to commemorate the victims of homophobia and transphobia and of all forms of discrimination.
